You loved my air fryer chicken breast recipe that I recently shared with you, so I thought that it would be a good idea to also share my air fryer fish recipe. The fish turns out crispy, moist, and delicious! I’m sure that you will love it as much as I do.

Air Fryer Fish Recipe

Ever since I got my air fryer, I’ve been obsessed with it! It’s just so easy to use, and I love the fact that I can still cook my favorite food in it without all the grease. Every time my husband wants to bake, roast, or fry something, he just throws it in the air fryer instead (I’m not kidding!).

This is a wonderful way to cook fried-style fish with very little oil, which makes it an easy and guilt-freemeal that you can enjoy on any day of the week.

We make this air fryer fish recipe quite often to serve for dinner, as this is a healthier version of traditional fish and chips that we all! Of course, this doesn’t mean that I never deep fry fish because I just love it so much, so if you’re after a traditional crunchy and light beer battered fish recipe then I also have the recipe for you!

So back to the Air Fryer fish recipe, I’ve seen many recipes on the internet where you need to spray oil over the breading before you air fry the fish. I found that this method causes the breading to fall off, so I use a tablespoon of oil instead that I coat the fish with.

What Kind of Fish Can Be Cooked in the Air Fryer?

This air fryer fish recipe works with any kind of fish fillets! Use cod, tilapia, catfish, pollock, hake, haddock, or even salmon.

Thawing Fish

The best way to thaw fish is by leaving it in the fridge overnight. Or, if the piece is not too big, you could just leave it on the counter for an hour submerged in ice-cold water until it’s thawed.

  • An Air Fryer. This is myfavorite air fryer, I got it after I shared this recipe that’s why you see a different one in the pictures of this post.
  • Stainless steel locking tongs
  • I love these stainless steel measuring cups and use them every time I cook, as well as those measuring spoons.
  • These are the mixing bowls that you see in all of my pictures, they’re honestly the best!
  • This air fryer magnetic cheat sheet is very handy, it contains cooking time and temperature to cook 66 most common ingredients which I find very useful for air fryer recipes.
  • I also really like these air fryer parchment liners, they’re not just for steaming and you can use them for cooking things like fries or chicken without worrying that the food will stick to the basket. They’re also quite cheap and there are 100 pcs in a package.
  • And for a full set of air fryer accessories, I recommend this set.

How to Air Fry Fish

I normally use fresh fish fillets to make this. But you could also use high-quality frozen fish fillets, just make sure that they’re completely defrosted/thawed before you bread and air fry them.

You will need oil to coat the fish fillets before coating in the breading. I usually go for olive oil (love the flavor!), canola, or vegetable oil.

For the breading, use either homemade or store-bought dried bread crumbs. Mix with any spices that you like, onion and garlic powders, black pepper, salt etc

Top Tips

  • You could use either fresh fish fillets or frozen fish fillets that are completely thawed. The fillets should not be too thin as thin strips won’t work in this recipe. For smaller pieces of fish, try this Air Fryer fish sticks recipe.
  • Make sure that your air fryer basket is not overcrowded as that will prevent the fish from crisping.
  • You might need to adjust the cooking times depending on the kind and the thickness of the fish that you’re using and the model of your air fryer. Fish is ready when it’s easily flaked with a fork.

FAQs

Does fish get crispy in the air fryer? ›

Easy Air Fryer Fish has a golden, crispy coating, a super quick cooking time, and is delish with tartar sauce or a squeeze of lemon. Use this recipe for cod or other white fish and get that Midwestern fish fry experience without the frying!

How do you make crispy batter in an air fryer? ›

An equal amount of all-purpose flour and cornstarch provides both structure and crunch to the batter. Cornstarch is a go-to ingredient for many fried foods (think crispy chicken wings), and using it to bolster the crisping power of flour resulted in a thinner, crispier, and sturdier (yet still delicate) breading.

How do I keep fish from drying in my air fryer? ›

Brush the air fryer grate with a little oil. Place the coated fish fillets in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they don't overlap. Air fry at 390°F (199°C) for 12-15 minutes. Halfway through, gently flip the fish fillets to ensure they don't stick and all sides get cooked well.

How do I get crispy results in my air fryer? ›

Add a Small Amount of Oil and Place in Basket

While we wish it were possible to fry without any oil, air fryers do need a little oil to make your food crispy (but you'll use a lot less than a traditional fryer).

Why is my fish not getting crispy? ›

You need heat. To kickstart the Maillard reaction, you'll need a high temperature of around 140°C / 280°F, this is when proteins and sugars in the fish skin start to do their thing, caramelise and crisp up.

How do you get the perfect crust on fish? ›

Use a heavy duty skillet, like a cast iron skillet (pictured) or a good quality, heavy non stick fry pan (I love my ScanPan, shown in the video). It heats better, and more evenly, which really helps to get an even, golden, crispy crust.

What kind of flour is used for crispy fish skin? ›

Dusting the fish skin with flour can also help to give a crisp finish. Use plain (all-purpose) flour, or some chefs recommend using the "instant" type of flours that are also known as sauce flours (Wondra is the best known brand in the US).

How to make crispier air fryer? ›

However, a small amount of oil is usually necessary to achieve a crispy texture. A drizzle or a quick oil spray is all you need for restaurant-quality fries and golden brown fried chicken, while other foods don't need any oil, like pizza or leftovers you might reheat.

Why are things not getting crispy in air fryer? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

Is it better to use wet or dry batter in an air fryer? ›

You also want to avoid putting food that has a wet batter, like corndogs or tempura shrimp, in air fryers. Wet batter goes everywhere, and without a proper oil bath the batter won't set, which means it won't be the crispy, fried item you hoped it would be, according to Polak.

Why is my fish not crispy in the air fryer? ›

Don't overcrowd your air fryer basket. This allows the fish to get crispy all over. If you don't have an air fryer, you can achieve similar results in a convection oven (see directions in the recipe), but I found that the air fryer delivers a crisper finish faster.

Do I need to flip fish in an air fryer? ›

In the middle of the cooking process, you'll want to flip the fish, for even cooking. Regardless of whether or not you need to lengthen your cooking time, the process will still be quick. For example, a six-ounce cod filet can cook in as little as 12 minutes.

Can I put fish on aluminum foil in the air fryer? ›

The chances are it will take a few attempts to nail your technique, but persevere and in no time you'll be adept at cooking fish in an air fryer. If you're cooking fish wrapped in tinfoil, to ensure succulence and flavour simply add seasoning, herbs and citrus and cook them as you would under the grill.

Do air fryers work well for fish? ›

Absolutely! The air fryer uses a fan to circulate hot air evenly around all sides of the coated fish fillets, cooking it quickly and with very little oil—just a spritz of cooking spray! This allows the fish to cook quickly and perfectly golden brown in just minutes, with no messy pot of hot oil!

Do air fryers really make food crispy? ›

The circulating air cooks the outside of foods first, which creates a crispy brown coating and keeps the inside soft, just like deep-fried foods. As the food cooks, a container below the basket catches any grease that drops. Bottom line: Air fryers create the crispy, chewy foods people love without all the oil.

Why are my fish sticks soggy in an air fryer? ›

Preheat – Many times, you don't have to preheat your airfryer, but in this case, preheating is what keeps your fish fingers from getting soggy. If you don't preheat, the fish fingers thaw in the air fryer, causing the breading to get soggy before the temperature gets high enough to cook them.

How do you're crisp fried fish in an air fryer? ›

STEP ONE: Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F. STEP TWO: Lay your fish in the air fryer in a single layer. STEP THREE: Reheat fish in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes or until the outside is crispy. Make sure to flip them halfway through.
