What could be easier than whipping up a keto mug cake? Nothing! That’s why you need this amazing list of delicious low carb mug cakes. Perfect for all occasions! Sugar free and grain free.

An updated list of the best keto mug cakes for your snacking pleasure!

Mug cake was something of a revelation for me when I became a food blogger. I’d honestly never heard of these almost-instant cakes until I started reading other food blogs and finding recipes on the internet.

They were like the little hidden secret of the recipe world, not to be found in the usual channels of cookbooks, cooking magazines or Food Network shows.

To say I was skeptical was an understatement. How could a few quick ingredients tossed together and cooked for a minute in the microwave taste any good? Butin desperation for something sweet one day, I decided to give one a try. Mind you, I had to give it a thorough makeover, since the one I was working from was of the full flour and sugar variety. But my first keto mug cake was absolutely divine and I was instantly hooked.

And the great thing about mug cakes is that they’re not just for dessert! They can be breakfast too.

Whether you call them mug cakes, one minute muffins, or muffins in a mug, they have a solid place in the low carb, gluten-free annals. They are easy to make and often just as tasty as more labor-intensive cakes, although rarely as pretty.

And they offer automatic portion control. So I spent some time hunting up the best keto mug cakes on the internet. Whether you are a chocolate lover or prefer cinnamon or fruity flavors, you are sure to find something you love.

I wanted to try the Lemon Coconut Mug Cake from Counting All Joy, but it looks like a broken link. What should be the home page to that site brings up something that suggests the whole site is gone. Is there another place I could get that recipe?

OK, I have finally found my chocolate snack cake. Working at home today, I made this during a break this afternoon. I ate it with some vanilla sour cream. It was heavenly. And the chocolate square in addition to the cocoa, really adds something to it.

Brilliant! Who was the clever person that came up with the single serve mug cake idea? It is exactly the help a person losing weight needs. No need to worry about being tempted by a second helping because there is no second helping. I made the single serve Cheesecake in a Mug Friday night. It was very good. I felt very satisfied. Oddly enough I also felt very virtuous because I knew I would not be taking a second serving. Nice concept!

My daugther likes the idea of that fast mug cakes, but they usually turn out to be kind of gummy and spongy. The consistency is just weird…. are we doing something wrong?

It’s the nature of microwave cooking. You can always try doing them in the oven instead.

I went to the Rachel Cooks website for the Meyer Lemon mug cake. What a frustrating site! I understand supporting other sites, but I will copy the recipe and avoid her site. I Wish you had just given the recipe. Eager to try it.

15 grams of carb per serving is not low carb (I just looked at one random recipe). At least not for me it isn’t.

Thank you! I’ve been back on the LC wagon less than a week and I’m dying for something sweet. Now all I have to do is decide which one… 🙂

After many years of LC, I developed an aversion to eggs. Now, I cannot believe I ever loved mock Danish, which makes me gag now. Same with mug cakes. I noticed one blogger had eggless so I am going to try using flax/chia egg. It makes the texture in your pancakes really soft and puffy so…..I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for this.

FAQs

Can I use water instead of milk in a mug cake? ›

It is entirely possible to change this recipe to make it without milk. If it is an issue with lactose intolerance or other dietary restrictions, you can use almond milk, cashew milk, or oat milk. An almond cashew blend is my particular favorite. If you'd prefer not to have any milk at all, you can use water instead.

Why did my mug cake turn out rubbery? ›

A rubbery mug cake is indicative of being overcooked, or incorrect measurements. Please be precise with the measurements and stop cooking once the cake is soft but not wet on the top.

Why did my mug cake fail? ›

Don't overfill your mug with ingredients

Even with the perfect mini whisk, things can still go wrong when making a mug cake. One big mistake involves overfilling the mug. Just like with any other baked good, mug cakes rise during the cooking process.

What is a keto cake made of? ›

Eggs: Eggs are a staple in keto baking as they add structure and moisture to the cake while providing essential fats and proteins. High-fat ingredients: Keto cakes often contain high-fat ingredients like butter, coconut oil, or heavy cream. These ingredients provide richness and help maintain the desired texture.

What makes a cake more moist water or milk? ›

One common ingredient swap that is known to help make cakes remarkably moist is using milk instead of water. Try switching out any water in your recipe for full-fat milk or buttermilk for a moist, decadent texture. Another ingredient that can enhance the moisture of your cake is mayonnaise.

Why does my mug cake taste bitter? ›

One of the most common misfortunes among bakers is that they are using too much baking soda or baking powder. Know that too much baking soda or baking powder in cakes will not just lead to a metallic and bitter taste, but it can also make a big mess in the oven as it will rise beyond expectations.

Why do mug cakes taste weird? ›

This is especially true when you add too much baking soda to your mug cake mixture, which often results in an unpleasant bitter flavor that makes for a disappointing cake.

Why is my mug cake rock hard? ›

If your mug cake is rock hard, it has been over-baked! Next time, lower the amount of time it cooks, because microwaves vary in wattage, causing some to cook faster than others. Also, be sure to use a standard-size regular coffee cup, not a deep mug.

Can you eat undercooked mug cake? ›

Undercooked cake can make you sick and according to the FDA, the highest risk does not come from eggs like people might believe, but rather from flour. Grains can be contaminated by bacteria from animal droppings, which are harvested and turned into flour. The cooking process kills the bacteria.

Why does my mug cake taste like flour? ›

The Ratio of Wet to Dry Ingredients Is Off

If you have more dry ingredients than wet, your cake may taste drier. Since flour is one of the dry ingredients, the cake often takes on a floury taste when this is the case. Be sure to follow the instructions and ingredient amounts carefully.

Are mug cakes fully cooked? ›

The microwaving times included in the instructions left the cake completely cooked, although the melted chocolate made it difficult to tell. If anything, the mug cake may have been slightly overcooked. Panelists reported that the texture was just a little bit dry, leaving the cake to coat the insides of one's mouth.

Why is it called Elvis Presley cake? ›

Before it's served, you'll add a layer of cream cheese frosting and sprinkle candied pecans on top for some crunch. Internet lore would have you believe this pineapple-topped concoction was Elvis Presley's favorite cake, that he even asked his grandmother to make it for him as a kid.

Is cream cheese keto? ›

Cream cheese: Cream cheese is very popular in the keto diet. At only 84 calories per 1 ounce serving, it has 1 gram of carbs and 2 grams of protein but packs 8 grams of fat per serving. It can be a keto-friendly snack or meal addition when more fat is needed.

Is it OK to eat a keto cake? ›

You can absolutely have a slice of keto birthday cake, even if you're not sticking to a ketogenic diet. Just keep in mind that this type of cake is made with different ingredients to fit the low-carb requirements of the keto diet, so it might not taste exactly like your usual birthday cake.

Can you use water instead of milk in cake? ›

If the recipe only needs a small amount of milk, such as 60ml, then replacing milk with just water should be fine. However, if you need any more than this, you can also add a tablespoon of butter for every 250ml of water to add some much-needed richness to your bake.

Can I put water instead of milk in a cake? ›

Water can be used in most recipes that call for milk.

What happens if I substitute water for the milk in a cake recipe? ›

In this case, substituting water with extra butter for milk should produce a cake with little or no noticeable differences. The taste, weight and texture of the cake should be similar, and there should be no crumbling or dryness if the recipe and baking times are followed.

What happens if you substitute water for milk in cake mix? ›

Baking tip #2: adding milk to your box cake mix in place of water adds a dense texture to your dessert leaving it moist and flavorful like a homemade cake. Or, if you prefer, you can add buttermilk, giving your cake a tangy flavor to balance out the sweetness.
