Six The Musical Broadway Reviews | Review Round-Up | Tips & More (2024)

Six the Musical centers around the six wives of the infamous King Henry VIII. “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived” historically summarize their fate. This Broadway musical attempts to give them a voice where they narrate their stories through music. From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the wives take the mic to battle it out over which who suffered the most at the hands of Henry VIII. It features a stellar star cast; the six wives are played by Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Abby Mueller, Brittney Mack, Samantha Pauly and Anna Uzele.

Six is co-directed by Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage, featuring choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille. The score features orchestrations by Tom Curran with music supervision and vocal arrangements by Joe Beighton. After a successful American debut at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2019, the show is now ready to blow away Broadway audiences on 12 Mar 2020, with previews beginning on 13 Feb 2020.

Six the Musical Broadway Reviews | What The Critics Think

“Aside from its sense of humor and spirited radicalism (and the musical force of the intensely committed and talented actresses in the show), the greatest asset of “Six” is the way it understands a complex historiographical paradox.”
- The Chicago Tribune on the 2019 Chicago Shakespeare Theater performance.

“Directed by Ms. Moss and Jamie Armitage, “Six” delivers pure entertainment throughout its headlong 80 minutes. The wickedly smart lyrics are well set on tunes that are both catchy and meaty; the cast of terrific singers sells them unstintingly, straight to the joyful finale.”
- The New York Times on the 2019 Chicago Shakespeare Theater performance.

“The queens are a forcefield. Ditto the score, and its glorious onslaught of power ballads, pile-driving punk numbers, day-glo ravers, Spice Girl realness, rap, hip-hop and head-banging, hair-whipping, foot-stomping, twerk-worthy old school rock-and-roll.”
- The Chicago Sun Times on the 2017 West End Theater performance.

“The musical's authors -- amazing alchemists Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss -- have created incessantly catchy and ingeniously crafted pop music gold crammed with historical nuggets about Tudor life and society. The result is unabashedly feminist in its perspective...”
- The Daily Herald on the 2017 West End Theater performance.

Six the Musical | Why You Must Watch The Show

The show has completely switched the narrative by lending an unapologetic feministic perspective by King Henry’s wives. For the first time, the story of Henry VIII is told through the eyes of the wives, rather than what history books have told us. The all-female cast is backed by an all-female band, Ladies in Waiting. The play uses head-banging music along with humorous, upbeat lyrics, to capture the spirit of the 16th Century women with 21st Century perspectives. Six the musical offers a unique and enthralling feminist take on six women who will forever stand out in history by tackling patriarchy, emotional abuse and tyranny.
